NAME: D.Scott Morris
FLASH MOB ROLE: Lead Guitar
From The Flash Mob, 9.12.2010: It is with terrible sadness and tears in our eyes to let you know that D.Scott passed away yesterday afternoon from complications due to cancer. D.Scott was an amazing musician, a better friend, a brother to his band mates, and a dedicated, loving husband. His passing is a tremendous loss to all of us, both personally and musically.
D.Scott was a founding member of both Ultrachronic and The Flash Mob, and was deeply immersed in the Denver music scene. He loved the Denver music scene with all of his heart, and did so much to support it. D.Scott was passionately involved with the Denver Music Board, and wrote a column called The D-List for the monthly publication Colorado Music Buzz Magazine. D.Scott was an avid supporter of many local bands, and regularly attended their live shows. In a 2009 interview, D.Scott was asked about the local Denver music scene. His response: "Here, we'll give each other a leg up, help a band when we can, and they'll return the favor. It's the sense of community that inspires me personally."
D.Scott put his heart and soul into the music he created. His guitar tone, haunting melodies, and face-melting guitar solos were always just as he wanted - he was a creative perfectionist, and had the unique ability to find just the right part, just the right riff, just the right tone, just the right arrangement. He had the ability to envision a song as a whole, more than the sum of its parts. These are rare talents indeed, as any musician will tell you.
A few months ago, The Flash Mob was awarded the Westword Music Showcase winner for funk. This honor was made possible only by the musical contributions of all of us, including D.Scott. At the time of the awards ceremony, D.Scott was deeply entrenched in his battle with cancer, and hadn't performed with The Flash Mob for several months. We presented to D.Scott the Westword plaque as a symbol of his hard work, dedication to the local music scene, and contribution to our band. He must have stared at it for hours. His beautiful wife Kara placed it on the mantle above their fireplace for him to see every day, as a reminder of our accomplishments as a group. D.Scott was extremely proud of that accomplishment - we may not have really deserved the award, but we're pretty sure a Westword Music Award has never meant more to anyone than it meant to him at that time. That award will continue to live at D.Scott and Kara's home as a symbol of what he meant to the entire Denver music scene.
D.Scott would want the show to go on - and the least we can do as a band to honor his contributions to our music is to continue making the music we love. D.Scott, we'll keep rocking for you, brother.
Peace and Love,
Kyle, Dave, Matt and Wayne
